Yesterday, the “Boxen statt Theater” event took place at the Bern Theatre, where Swiss boxer Angelo Peña competed in the super featherweight division (up to 58.967 kg) against Brazilian opponent Eduardo Costa. The fight was scheduled for 10 rounds of 3 minutes each and ended in a clear and decisive victory for Peña.
The 29-year-old Peña, now boasting a flawless record of nine wins (six by knockout) and holding the IBO Continental Title for the past three months, delivered a commanding performance in the ring. Already in the first round, he scored a knockdown against Costa, who barely managed to survive until the break.
In the subsequent rounds, the fight developed into a thrilling contest, with the Brazilian opponent gradually finding his rhythm. However, he ultimately could not withstand the relentless pressure from the hometown favorite. After a fast-paced and intense battle, with Peña clearly in control throughout, the judges awarded a unanimous decisionin his favor: 97–92, 97–92, 96–93. Peña expressed satisfaction with his performance, stating: “I had fun, and I wanted to give the fans – who paid good money – something to enjoy. My opponent was good, but I’m ‘The One,’ not him.”
Promoter Leander Strupler also expressed his satisfaction: “We were able to deliver exciting fights and thrilling moments in the ring for the audience. With this performance, Angelo Peña takes another big step up the rankings and has earned another title shot.”
“A title fight with one of the ‘Big Four’ world sanctioning bodies,” Strupler revealed regarding his protégé’s future plans. One thing is certain: Swiss boxing fans can look forward to more spectacular fights in the near future. The next Swiss Pro Boxing event will take place on 14 September 2024 at the Mobiliar Arena in Bern (Gümligen).
